Jakarta Govt to Expand Free Public Transport Benefits to 21 Groups

The Jakarta Provincial Government will expand the coverage of beneficiaries under the Free Service Card (KLG) from 15 to 21 groups.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the expansion is intended to ensure that free public transport subsidies reach those who genuinely need them.

"In the near future, the Jakarta Government will also decide to expand free transport benefits from the previous 15 groups to 21 groups," Pramono said at Balai Samudera in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/29).

The six new KLG beneficiary groups include companions of people with disabilities, job seekers with Jakarta ID cards, patients undergoing routine referrals, students from low-income families who are not covered by KJP or KJMU, assisted MSMEs, and disaster survivors during the recovery period.

Pramono noted that the expanded access to free public transport is planned to take effect on January 1, 2027, along with fare adjustments for public transport services such as Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, and LRT.

"Starting January 1, we will expand the coverage from 15 groups to 21 groups. But I have to be honest that on January 1, there will also be some fare adjustments for Transjakarta and Transjabodetabek," Pramono pointed out.

He explained that public transport fares in Jakarta have remained lower than those in surrounding areas and have remained unchanged for the past 20 years.

The fare adjustments are intended to reduce subsidies for higher-income groups and redirect the funds toward supporting low-income residents.

"We will reduce subsidies for groups considered financially capable. The subsidies they receive are still quite high, but we will reduce them," he said.

Pramono called on the Jakarta Government to immediately inform residents about the transport fare adjustments. He also assured them that the adjustments would take their economic capacity into consideration.

"And I am confident that compared with fares in areas around Jakarta, these fares will still be the lowest," he added.
